Youth Testimonial:
At age 13, the District Attorney’s office referred a young man to YouthZone’s diversion program with a one-year probationary period. The young man disclosed to YouthZone that he began using drugs when he was six years old. His parents were divorced early in his life. He and his siblings had lived between parents sporadically. Both of his parents had histories of drug and alcohol abuse and both had been incarcerated.

This young man was in the YouthZone diversion program approximately one month when he was faced with watching his brother try to commit suicide. He called for his YouthZone counselor to sit with him during the time he was at the hospital with his brother. YouthZone responded.

During his involvement with YouthZone, he received multiple services including individual and family counseling, outdoor activities, community service projects, and leadership camps. At the time this young man entered the YouthZone diversion program, he aspired to be a drug dealer. He saw his life filled with drug use and crime, ending with life imprisonment.

When he left YouthZone, this young man was no longer using drugs; he was back in school; and he continued to do well. Both he and his family continued to call YouthZone when they needed help or just wanted someone to talk to.
